On Top for Two Decades: Meet Brad Rush

Recently, Atlanta Small Business Network put the spotlight on Rush, who is celebrating two decades in the franchise world, and interviewed him on how he became the top performer with the area developer opportunity.

Started in 1991, there are now 140 JAN-PRO Franchise Development offices across 14 different countries supporting over 10,000 JAN-PRO Cleaning & Disinfecting independent franchisees.

“It’s a global brand, it’s a global entity,” Rush said.

Rush said his father was the first to propose the idea of JAN-PRO Franchise Development as a family business opportunity. At first, he thought his dad had “lost his mind.” But he promised his father he’d look at the numbers.

“As I pulled the layers back I realized, we’re not in the cleaning business. Our job is to lead others who have a dream of running their own business. I started to understand the competition. I felt like there were opportunities there where we could differentiate ourselves from what was going on in the marketplace.”

Rush bought the rights to the Atlanta market in August 2001. A few years later, he took over the Oklahoma City territory. Now, he said there are about 370 active JAN-PRO Cleaning & Disinfecting certified franchisees in Atlanta, and another 170 in Oklahoma City. In all, JAN-PRO Cleaning & Disinfecting Franchisees in both locations service about 3,000 businesses on a weekly basis.

“The neat thing is, we’ve yet to scratch the surface in terms of what the true potential is,” he said. “I never imagined it 20 years ago, but it has been a true blessing, and I consider myself very fortunate to wake up doing something every day that we’re passionate about.”

Rush explains that every day is different and presents new challenges, but more than anything, the company has the opportunity to make a positive impact on peoples’ lives. “That’s the greatest blessing about what this business provides us”, he said.

As a Regional Developer, Rush is a business executive who recruits and coaches entrepreneurs who own JAN-PRO Cleaning & Disinfecting businesses. “So, to wake up every day and know based on how effective we are at what we’re tasked with doing, the impact that it can have on the cleaning and disinfecting franchisees’ own businesses, their careers, their livelihoods, their idea of exceeding what they thought was even possible, is one of the best and greatest blessings that I’ve ever had.”

One of the main advantages of JAN-PRO, Rush said, is its tried and proven business model, which sets aspiring entrepreneurs a step ahead of other business owners who start from scratch. But even with a model that has propelled countless small business owners into successful careers, maintaining industry dominance means you can’t get complacent.

“We want to make sure our cleaning and disinfecting franchisees remain at the cutting edge of what they’re doing,” Rush said. “We’re not coaching them how to be great cleaners. We’re trying to cultivate them and coach them on how to be great business owners.”

After having thought he saw it all, Rush was presented new challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic. But true to JAN-PRO Franchise Development form, the company and its certified business owners stood up to the task.

“There has never been a time in our 20 years of business where I’ve been more proud of our franchise owners,” he said. “I mean, they’re essential workers, and I think they were selfless and fulfilled an important service for the benefit of other people.”

20 years later, he’s still excited to come to work.

“And that’s because I have the privilege and opportunity to support a group of people that I have tremendous admiration and respect for,” he said.
